kajeet is a prepaid cell phone service especially for kids. In practical terms that means that it is has a group of parental control features that aren’t generally offered. Parents can decide locations from which the device can be used and also can specify from whom calls and text messages can be accepted. Times and days of the week that the phones can be used can also be controlled.
The basic pricing plan is just $4.99 per month but it only includes 10 minutes of airtime. It’s pretty tough to justify paying $.50 per minute for a kid, or anyone else, for that matter, to talk on the phone but there’s some relief in that additional minutes are a rather reasonable $.10 each. The planned that’s billed as Standard is $29.99 per month and includes 300 airtime minutes so that’s a more acceptable $.10 per minute. Additional minutes are $.10 each on this plan as well. Text messages on both of these plans are $.10 each. Additional plan options include daily plan that’s $.32 per day plus $.10 per minute for voice service and $.10 for each text message as well as talk only plans and add on text packages.
Recognizing kids’ propensity for text messaging, kajeet’s Special plan provides unlimited text messaging plus 150 voice minutes for $19.99 monthly. Like the other options, voice minutes in excess of the plan’s parameters are $.10 each.
GPS Phone Locator is a web based security function and is available for an additional $9.99 per month. With this service, the phone will send an email to parents on a defined schedule, up to five times a day, telling exactly where the phone, and presumably the kid, is located. Parents can also go online at any time to see where the phone is.
The cost for phones from kajeet ranges from $19.99 for a basic refurbished device to $169.99 for the full featured LG Rumor.
