Virgin Mobile offers an impressive combination of calling options that could be ideal for many callers needs. Of particular note is the ability to customize features within a plan to meet individual requirements. Virgin Mobile places an emphasis on text messaging which has made them a favorite among young users. For these reasons, we’ve chosen Virgin Mobile to receive the “TopTenREVIEWS Bronze Award” for Prepaid Cellular Phone providers.
Unlimited Plans
Virgin Mobile offers an unlimited monthly voice calling plan for $49.99. Unlimited domestic long distance is included in the flat fee. The plan can be made nearly identical to the top rated plan offered by Boost Mobile by adding unlimited messaging, which includes text (SMS) and multimedia messages (MMS) as well as eMail for an additional $10 monthly and mobile web service for another $10. Though that takes the price to $69.99 to be equivalent to Boost’s plan, it’s still good compared to the offerings of most carriers. We should note that the mobile web service for Virgin’s plan is limited to 50MB per month and that additional web usage is charged at $1.50/MB compared to Boost’s unlimited feature.
Virgin Mobile also provides service on a contract basis. For further information, consult our Cell Phone Providers site.
Other Monthly Packages
In addition to the unlimited plan, Virgin offers two lower cost monthly plans that essentially offer $.10 per minute anytime calling and a couple of free nights and weekends options. The first costs $29.99 monthly and allows for 300 anytime minutes plus 1,000 night and weekend minutes. Nights begin at 7PM. The second plan gives 400 anytime minutes plus unlimited nights and weekends for $39.99 a month. Additional minutes run $.20.
Either of these offerings can be combined with one of two text and messaging plans and also two mobile web packages. One messaging plan provides 1,000 SMS, MMS or emails for $5 per month and the other gives unlimited messaging. Additional SMS messages and email are $.15 each while additional MMS messages run $.25. You can also add 20MB of monthly mobile web access for $5 or 50MB for $10. Web service beyond the plan limits costs $1.50/MB.
Virgin Mobile also offers a couple of messaging packages independently of the voice programs. You can sign up for up to 1,000 SMS, MMS and emails monthly for $14.99 or unlimited messages for $14.99. If you choose one of these options, voice calling is $.10 per minute.
Daily Plans
Virgin Mobile doesn’t have any cost per day plans that are exactly like those offered by Boost and Cricket but it provide three packages that are similar and offer relatively low per minute cost and month to month rollover of unused minutes provided the plan is kept active. The most basic provides 200 minutes per month for $20, i.e. $.10 per minute. The next gives 400 minutes for $30 or $.075 per minute. The top plan features 1,000 monthly minutes for $50, equivalent to $.05 a minute. As with Virgin’s other plans, minutes which exceed plan limits are $.20 each.
There are three text and messaging plans and also three mobile web plans that can be combined with the above programs. SMS, MMS and email are 200 for $5, 1,000 for $10, or unlimited for $20. Mobile web access is available for $5 for 5MB, $10 for 20MB, or $20 for 50MB.
Pay-as-You-Go
If you want the simplicity of a pure pay-as-you-go plan, you can get it from Virgin Mobile for $.20 per minute. SMS messages and email are $.15 each, MMS messages run $.25, and mobile web is available for $1.50/MB and is charged only on days that it’s used.
