USA, Canada, Spain Win Title for Most Expensive Cell Phone Bills
The US of A won another title, but not in anything prestigious like the Olympics or Chess Boxing or even a Hot Dog Eating Contest. No, this title carries a badge of shame (and hopefully consumer outrage). The United States of America has won the distinction of having the most expensive cell phone bills in the world.
It should come as no surprise to anyone who pays for their own phone these days, but it stings so much more when it becomes official. This finding was announced by the OECD, who published the results of a study where the OECD compared prices for a set number of minutes and texts annually. The USA came out as the most expensive, while Canada and Spain were close runners-up. This report seems particularly prescient when joined with a report from the Wall Street Journal about how much the networks spend on lobbying in our country each year.
If you want to live somewhere with cheap cell phone access, you should move to the Netherlands or Sweden, the two countries at the bottom of the list. Both countries had significantly smaller costs than anything you’ll find here. If you’d like to see the numbers for yourself, check out the OECD report.
